KEEPING HEALTHY WEEK

Keeping healthy was the focus for everyone at King's Lodge Community School last week, with the children and staff enjoying their teaching and learning about mental, physical and social health.  Many local organisations kindly volunteered to support the school in promoting healthy eating, physical activity and personal well-being.

The week began with children creating an area for relaxation in part of the school grounds currently under development.  Each class planted the tree their classroom is named after.  In the staffroom at break time, all the staff were treated to a range of healthy foods, including fruits, seeds and cereal bars.

On Tuesday, Year 3 children learnt how to create an ‘Eatwell Plate’ of food with Sodexho Catering’s dietician Mrs Wan Mek, whilst on Wednesday Year 1 children were treated to a delicious healthy food tasting session organised by Sainsbury’s (Working in the Community) food adviser, Mrs Pat MacDonald.  Farmer Tom Calver of Westcombe Dairy in Somerset , also demonstrated to Class Elm the health benefits of eating cheese.  Megan, in Year 2, recalled, “Cheddar cheese has lots of calcium which is good for our bones and teeth.”

During Wednesday afternoon, former KLS pupil, Pete Sykes, of the Wiltshire Cricket Board, led a sporty session in the playground, encouraging active team work amongst the Year 4s, and also attended the KS2 assembly to help promote sporting opportunities in the local community.

As part of keeping our bodies clean, on Thursday school nurse, Lucy Jillings, visited the Reception classes to teach the children how to avoid the spread of germs by washing their hands thoroughly, using lots of soap and water.

The Year 5 and 6 children enjoyed participating in a carousel of three physical activities and four classroom sessions about healthy eating, mental well-being and the importance of exercise, all planned and led by groups of Year 11 students studying PE at Abbeyfield School .  Javid Pond of Class Oak said, “The activities were great!  We learnt how to work in a team and how to calm down when we become stressed and anxious about things, particularly in sport.”

The successful week concluded with Ann and Mike from Dancer’s of Chippenham teaching the Year 2 classes to waltz and dance an Irish reel, with plenty of fun and laughter.

Headteacher, Mrs Jane Ratcliff, said “This was a wonderful week, very well organised by Mr Dan Wrixon, Acting DH and PSHE & C lead learner, with other schools and outside visitors contributing to its success; the children loved this hands on approach and already know so much more, about how to stay healthy.”

The School Council are now planning to organise and run a healthy tuck shop at break times.  The opticians, Specsavers, and FACE (Farming and Countryside Education) will also be supporting King’s Lodge later in the year, to further promote healthy food and lifestyles.
