King's Lodge School was built in 1989 to replace the Westmead Infant and Junior Schools. The school takes it's name from the history of the land on which it stands. The connection between King Alfred the Great and the Town of Chippenham is well known. This includes the area surrounding the school, with the names of some of the roads reflecting this period of history. The school stands on the land which was once Pewsham Forest. It is certain that from his hunting lodge King Alfred spent much of his time hunting in the forest. The King was a man of great faith. He was also the promoter of much learning and scholarship. He once declared his intention: "To live worthily as long as I live, and after my life, to leave those who shall come after me, my memory in good works." We have incorporated these sentiments into the aims of the present 'King's Lodge' and have named the various parts of the building, some only a year old, on an arboreal, woodland theme to link with the spiritual foundation of the school. A wooden carved statue of King Alfred stands in the school grounds as a constant reminder. |
